The decommissioning process is long and complex. Studsvik's services encompass the complete decommissioning and dismantling process from feasibility studies, planning and project management to practical dismantling work and the subsequent waste
treatment. For each project we provide customised solutions that include feasibility studies, project planning, project management, field implementation, waste management, decontamination, waste processing and health physics support.
Studsvik offer a decommissioning service that integrates the utilisation of traditional decommissioning methods together with advanced tooling for material sectioning, surface decontamination, volume reduction equipment and technology to monitor and free release materials. Additionally, we have integrated the on-site treatment, packaging, transportation and off-site processing of contaminated materials to further enhance the waste volume reduction and waste treatment together with our established fixed waste treatment facilities.
A major source of waste in decommissioning is from the decontamination of concrete building surfaces. In decontamination of facilities it is important to consider the requirements of removing radiological controls and exempt waste release criteria. For this type of work, Studsvik has developed an innovative robotic approach that can perform precise scabbling of concrete surfaces and has an integrated monitoring capability. This ensures that the decontamination is completed in the shortest period of time and that only the amount of material required to clean a surface is removed leading to substantially lower waste volumes, making significant savings for Customers.
Studsvik has developed a diamond wire sawing system for demolition activities including the cutting of concrete, metal and concrete/metal combinations. This system has been used in several projects. The latest modifications of this equipment enable it to perform dry cutting. This provides for a cleaner cutting system, with significantly reduced risk of spreading of contamination and easier to treat secondary wastes. We have also continued to develop our remote dismantling activities including innovations in the field deployment of Brokk ROV's to improve precision and workface productivity.
